Men's Hockey Wins ESCHL Playoff Championship Two Consecutive Years
Colleen Macaalino - 2/19/12
No one saw this freight training coming. From the moment the Rams stepped on the ice this past Friday night they knew it would be different. They knew they had to take something back to Rhody and that something was the Championship Cup.
The Rams entered the playoffs as the 4th seed playing 5th seed Robert Morris PA. Playing a physical, penalty ridden game the Rams handily beat RMU 7-1. The prize for this win was a match up the next day against the University of Delaware, the #2 team in the ACHA D1 national rankings.
As the sun set on Saturday, the Rams must have remembered a few words from the great Herb Brookes. "Tonight, we skate with them. Tonight, we stay with them...and we shut them down because we can! Tonight, WE are the greatest hockey team in the world." And that is exactly what they did when they knocked the Blue Hens out of the playoffs and beat them 7-2.
The Rams awoke Sunday morning with their eyes on the prize as they prepared to face Stony Brook for the championship title. The team that swept them at home the weekend before....but not today. The Rams beat Stony Brook 4-3 in OT to take the Championship cup. The battle was hard fought by both teams but URI's defensive play was unmatched while offense did what needed to be done.
Sophmore Sean O'Neil had the winning goal from Junior David Macalino. Sean O'Neil was named Tournament MVP.
Congratulations to the URI Rams for bringing back the cup to it's Rhody home.
